Tenormin is a medication used for lowering blood pressure (hypertension), relieving angina symptoms, and improving the chances of survival after a heart attack. It may also be used "off-label" for other reasons, such as migraines or anxiety.
Tenormin is part of a class of medicines called beta-adrenergic blocking agents, or beta blockers for short. It helps to block a specific type of beta receptor called beta-1 receptors. By blocking beta-1 receptors, the medication causes the reverse effect of stress hormones, such as adrenaline (epinephrine). It decreases heart rate and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as the workload of the heart, which means the heart requires less blood and oxygen to work properly.
Tenormin is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent. Tenormin blocks the action of the sympathetic nervous system, a portion of the involuntary nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates the pace of the heartbeat. By blocking the action of these nerves, tenormin reduces the heart rate and is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms. Tenormin also reduces the force of heart muscle contraction and lowers blood pressure. By reducing the heart rate and the force of muscle contraction, tenormin reduces heart muscle oxygen demand. Since angina occurs when oxygen demand of the heart exceeds supply, tenormin is helpful in treating angina.
